The Buzz about Bees: Biology of a Superorganism (Hardcover) by Jürgen Tautz

With spectacularly beautiful colour photographs and an easy understandable text The Buzz about Bees tells the story of honeybees in a new perspective. Based on the latest data, notably from his own research group, Jürgen Tautz provides a wonderful insight into the realms of bees.

In contrast to the view of bee colonies as perfect societies of selfless individuals ruled by a queen, Tautz introduces them as a "superorganism", a self organizing and complex adaptive system based on a network of communication; a fascinating result of evolution, a mammal in several bodies.

The entire range of astonishing bee activities is described. Remarkable action photographs never shown before present bees busy with cell cleaning, caring for the brood, serving in the queen's court, visiting flowers, receiving nectar, producing honey, comb building, entrance guarding, heating and cooling. Spotlights include bees grooming, swarming, fighting, telephoning, sleeping and communicating by high-toned beeping, scents and dances.

Bee Products: Properties, Applications and Apitherapy– Avshalom Mizrahi

This book is expensive but an extraordinary value if you are seriously interested in the use of bee products for medicine. It is a resource I have returned to many times and referred to others. The price should be compared to the cost of attending an excellent international conference, rather than compared to the price of a book.

Highlights for me were:

The best article on bee pollen I have ever read and the only source I've found on the benefits of pollen during pregnancy. Very serious & very concise.

Dr Franco Feraboli's challenge of the basic assumptions on the cause of the primary beneficial effects of bee venom in medicine. A major contribution to the literature.

Dr Theo Cherbuliez's classic article on the role of bee sting therapy and chronicity and acuteness of health conditions.

Research on the use of propolis as a preservative.

The Shamanic Way of the Bee: Ancient Wisdom and Healing Practices of the Bee Masters by Simon Buxton

Reveals for the first time the ancient tradition of bee shamanism and its secret practices and teachings.

  • Examines the healing and ceremonial powers of the honeybee and the hive.
  • Reveals bee shamanism's system of acupuncture, which predates the Chinese systems.
  • Imparts teachings from the female tradition and explores the transformative powers of the magico-sexual elixirs they produce.

Bee shamanism may well be the most ancient and enigmatic branch of shamanism, yet it exists throughout the world—wherever in fact the honeybee exists. Its medicinal tools are now in common usage—such as honey, pollen, propolis, and royal jelly—and even the origins of Chinese acupuncture can be traced back to the ancient practice of applying bee stings to the body's meridians.

In this authoritative ethnography and spiritual memoir, Simon Buxton--an elder of the Path of Pollen--reveals for the first time the richness of this tradition: its subtle intelligence; its sights, sounds, and smells; and its unique ceremonies, which until now have been known only to initiates. Buxton's footsteps were first put on the Path of Pollen at age nine when an Austrian bee shaman cured him of a near fatal bout of encephalitis. This early contact prepared him for his later meeting with an elder of the tradition who took him on as an apprentice. Following an intense initiation that opened him to the mysteries of the hive mind, the author learned over the next 13 years the practices, rituals, and tools of bee shamanism. He experienced the healing and spiritual powers of honey and other bee products, including the flying ointment used by medieval witches, as well as ritual initiations with the female members of the tradition—the Mellisae—and the application of magico-sexual "nectars" that promote longevity and ecstasy. The Shamanic Way of the Bee is a rare view into the secret wisdom of this age-old tradition.

The Bible of Bee Venom Therapy by Bodog F. Beck

As a physician who utilizes bee venom therapy with great success for arthritis, asthma, sarcoidosis (one of the most valuable and unknown uses of BVT), and many acute and chronic inflammatory conditions I have been searching for this book for several years. Almost everyone I know in the field spoke about it and its author, Bodog Beck, MD, the modern father of bee venom therapy, yet very few people actually had a copy. This book will provide you with everything you need to understand the subject and is, without a doubt, the most comprehensive book on the subject.

The arthritis doctors and medical establishment have no interest in BVT since they can't patent and make money off a natural substance. In addition, BVT has actually eliminated these conditions in many patients, according to the authors. Would a drug company that keeps patients on arthritis medicine their whole lives like that? But, as Dr. Beck, a well known doctor of internal medicine who practiced in New York City years ago and had thousands of happy patients who were treated with BVT and many other practitioners can attest, bee venom therapy (BVT) works!
